New Pap

If your Physician mentions Cobas HPV Test to you, do not be alarmed. Recently the FDA has approved Cobas HPV Test for cancer screening. This test may replace the old Pap Smear as the first line screening for human papillomavirus. It works by detecting certain strands of DNA associated with developing cervical cancer (versus a pap, whch ID's already atypical cells).  The FDA first approved the test, called the Cobas HPV Test in 2011 for use in conjunction with or as a follow-up to a Pap test (cell cytology), which examines cervical cells for changes that might become cervical cancer. Now they have expanded the use of the test to include use as either a co-test or as a primary cervical cancer screening test.  Medical guidelines have not been updated yet, but given the buzz, Cobas could be the new go-to test in the very near future. Do your research (read the FDA announcement) and discuss any and all testing with your Doctor before making any decisions &/or assumptions!
